Munetaka Murakami is a baseball player who plays as an infielder for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
Born on February 2, 2000 in Kumamoto, Japan, Munetaka began playing baseball at age five.
He later played baseball for Kyushū Gakuin Integrated High School, where he recorded a total of 52 home runs and earned the nickname “Babe Ruth of Higo”.
Murakami was drafted by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, in the first round of the 2017 NPB Draft. He was also an alternative for the Yomiuri Giants and the Rakuten Golden Eagles.
He had signed a contract worth 80 million yen with the Swallows, plus a 7.2 million yen annual salary.
Murakami is the first offensive player to win the NPB Triple Crown at age 22, since 2004, and the first by a Central League player since 1986.
Murakami was also the first to win the Central League MVP in a unanimous vote since 2013.
